Ancient China, Gunpowder, and Paper.

We touched on China BC, here.

This time we were learning about the beginning of Gunpowder, Paper, and China’s three Kingdoms in the 1st century AD

Magic Tree House Fact Tracker #31: China: Land of the Emperor’s Great Wall: A Nonfiction Companion to Magic Tree House #14: Day of the Dragon King (A Stepping Stone Book(TM))
is made to go with the Magic Tree House book “Day Of The Dragon-King (Magic Tree House 14, paper)” but it has a lot of information that was helpful for this study as well.

We also got “The Story of Paper” by Ying Chang Compestine.

I had planned to try to make paper with the boys but when it came down to it what I wanted to do proved to be too much work for me to jump in on.

I found resources for Gunpowder hard to come by but here are two interesting video clips we found on the history channel’s site,

Gunpowder: A Brief Big History

I did decide to delve into Chinese Characters and Mandarin this time though.

The boys had a lot of fun trying out different characters for numbers.

The book they used is “The First 100 Chinese Characters: Simplified Character Edition: The Quick and Easy Way to Learn the Basic Chinese Characters (Tuttle Language Library)”.

We used Tuttle Chinese for Kids Flash Cards Kit Vol 1 Simplified Character: [Includes 64 Flash Cards, Downloadable Audio, Wall Chart & Learning Guide]: Simplified Character v. 1 (Tuttle Flash Cards) to learn some Mandarin.

I have the Early Start Mandarin Chinese with Bao Bei the Panda
videos for children that are great at teaching words and phrases but they proved too young for the boys now.

I was a little sad they are too big for them.

I remember how much they liked them when they were little and how great they are at teaching Mandarin!

chopsticks

I had the boys try out chopsticks for the first time as well!

It did not go well with my youngest…

HA!

If you want to see other resources that I saved but did not get to, check out my Pinterest board for Ancient History, here.

Money Saving Fail!

Curriculum can cost a lot.

In case you did not know.

curriculum

I try to save costs some by getting as many history books as I can from the library but some of the other stuff requires me to purchase the book.

I bought some of my curriculum from a second hand store for homeschoolers called Bibliomania in Tulsa.

firstlanguagelessons

I bought First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind Level 3 from them.

It was only slightly cheaper than buying it on Amazon and it came in this binding because that is what the original owner preferred.

I wish I had bought the one that had not been cut up like this because it is harder to store in the binder.

With Level 3 the boys needed worksheets, which I would need to buy new.

After looking at their site, I got the bright idea to buy the PDF version instead.

I made sure it was okay to print two copies of it since I had two students using it(my 2nd and 3rd grader do a lot of the same work).

worksheets

So I have been printing the boys worksheets for the school year from the PDF version of the workbook.

It has been a pain.

For one, it is 352 pages!

That is a lot of printing.

I finally decided to figure out if I was actually saving enough money to warrant the extra work.

I took the cost of the bundle of paper we buy and divided it by cost per sheet of paper, than multiplied it by the number of sheets we print.

$5.23

Not bad.

Than I took the cost of ink for the printer and the number of pages it says you get per ink cartridge, divided to cost per sheet and multiplied it by how many sheets we print.

$35.05

OUCH.

After adding the cost of the PDF file my total price for printing it myself?

$55.28!

The cost of buying two workbooks?

$33.78

Fail…

I am buying the workbooks next year.

Have you ever tried to save some money and ended up spending more?

Truckin’ along

I feel like we are almost to the finish line.

We may be limping along but we will cross it.

end

Any other homeschoolers, educators, parents out there feeling the same?

timeline

I keep meaning to get my next homeschool post up but putting my thoughts together along with links and information seems like too much work right now…

working

The boys are doing fine.

I think it is just me that is counting down days until we finish curriculum.

If you too feel like the school year is taking a long time to end, please know you are not alone.

Since we have a lot to do before the end I also need more time.

It is an odd, “it’s too far away, we need it to be farther” kind of thing.

I like to want two things at once.

It keeps things interesting.
