Foss State Park & Washita Wildlife Refuge ~Foss, OK

The trip to Palo Duro was a bit too long to pull a camper in one day so I planned a stop around halfway.

afossDSC_3041

Nick had to work on the day we left so we got to Foss State Park late in the day.

afossDSC_3061

This dollar spot Target find worked out great to keep Little Bit entertained on the trip!

The full hookup sites that were open were a bit close together for me but it worked out.

I believe there are more available during the summer but they close some of the campgrounds in the winter.

The Washita Wildlife Refuge is right next to Foss State Park and I had been wanting to visit it for a while.

So we drove up to it and saw the rest of Foss State Park also the next day.

afossDSC_3110 afossDSC_3117

The lake water was so pretty and clear!

afossDSC_3119 afossDSC_3120

Look at this beautiful swimming beach at Foss State Park!

afossDSC_3121

I can’t wait to go back when we can swim!

afossDSC_3124 afossDSC_3129 afossDSC_3134 afossDSC_3137 afossDSC_3138 afossDSC_3140 afossDSC_3148

We did run into a problem with the wildlife refuge.

It happened to be one of the few days they closed areas of the refuge so people could hunt.

It was a bit disappointing but we went back the next day to hike the trails that had been closed.

afossDSC_3149 afossDSC_3150 afossDSC_3178

Huge fields of white cotton!

So pretty!

afossDSC_3184 afossDSC_3185 afossDSC_3186

This bridge was one of the few things open on the 1st day we visited.

afossDSC_3192 afossDSC_3193 afossDSC_3200 afossDSC_3210

There was a nice hiking trail right next to our campsite.

Nick is great at getting smiles and laughter for pics 🙂

afossDSC_3285 afossDSC_3308 afossDSC_3309

I love how pretty Oklahoma grass is in the fall.

It lights up at sunset.

afossDSC_3313

One of my kids took this, I did not get that close to a dead animal…

ha

afossDSC_3317 afossDSC_3326 afossDSC_3329

Foss State Park has a Bison Herd!

afossDSC_3341 afossDSC_3373

A quick trip back to Washita Wildlife Refuge before heading to Texas!

We saw so many deer!

afossDSC_3383

And coot’s…

afossDSC_3386 afossDSC_3394 afossDSC_3395 afossDSC_3405

Even their signs had a southern accent…

A lot of easy, short hikes to see beautiful Oklahoma.

This lake was so beautiful!

I am so glad we stopped here!

Do you have a favorite state park where you live?

Here is a video of our time at the park and wildlife refuge!

Maplewood State Park ~Pelican Rapids, MN

Maplewood State Park

I love this park so much that we ended up going three times while visiting family in MN!

amnDSC_8743

The first time we ended up just taking the twins and my niece.

This is the woodland trail loop.

It is under a mile but so pretty!

amnDSC_8831 amnDSC_8835 amnDSC_8885

I may have told my husband that I was not going home…

amnDSC_8888 amnDSC_8890 amnDSC_8891

Minnesota in the fall is hard to leave!

amnDSC_8897 amnDSC_8904

My adorable niece.

amnDSC_8922 amnDSC_8919 amnDSC_9305

For the second visit, we had all of our kids and came into the park from the south.

amnDSC_9319

This is a small portion of the Star Loop trail.

amnDSC_9335 amnDSC_9346

Next, we walked some of this beautiful trail near Maplewood Church.

amnDSC_9384

I had actually decided to try a family picture with this stunning backdrop but a birthday party started.

I could not bring myself to get out my tripod and set everyone up for a family pic with an audience.

amnDSC_9387 amnDSC_9396 amnDSC_9405 amnDSC_9413

amnDSC_9469 amnDSC_9472 amnDSC_9492

We drove into in the park a bit more and ended up stopping to take this pic on a side road.

amnDSC_9511 amnDSC_9530

I love how it looks like everyone is cooperating and having fun but in real life, I had one mad at me and glaring for most of the pics…

amnDSC_9535 amnDSC_9532

amnDSC_1052

On our 3rd visit, we had just the girls(the boys opted to stay and play with cousins).

We hiked on the Ironwood Trail.

amnDSC_1058 amnDSC_1062 amnDSC_1067

I can’t get over how pretty the woods were.

amnDSC_1075 amnDSC_1077 amnDSC_1084 amnDSC_1144 amnDSC_1153 amnDSC_1164 amnDSC_1169 amnDSC_1182 amnDSC_1238

The girls decided to throw leaves at Nick on the hike back to the vehicle.

amnDSC_1239 amnDSC_1248

Love these.

amnDSC_1249 amnDSC_1250 amnDSC_1251 amnDSC_1252 amnDSC_1253

I am already missing fall in Minnesota!

Gloss Mountain State Park ~Fairview, OK

We went to Gloss Mountain State Park 3 times while camping nearby.

aglossDSC_7520 aglossDSC_7524 aglossDSC_7533 aglossDSC_7536 aglossDSC_7538 aglossDSC_7542 aglossDSC_7547 aglossDSC_7548 aglossDSC_7549

I went to the top with three of the kids Saturday afternoon.

aglossDSC_7555 aglossDSC_7557 aglossDSC_7559

She likes to stop in the shade.

Every hike, she is stopped somewhere in the shade.

aglossDSC_7575 aglossDSC_7578 aglossDSC_7580

These views always make the hike up worth it.

aglossDSC_7594 aglossDSC_7595 aglossDSC_7629 aglossDSC_7630 aglossDSC_7633 aglossDSC_8044

I could not resist going back that same evening.

I missed most of the sunset but it was still magical up there.

aglossDSC_8054 aglossDSC_8063 aglossDSC_8065

It was close to bedtime so I just took the two oldest up.

aglossDSC_8069 aglossDSC_8073 aglossDSC_8081

My younger boy asked that we walk to the end this time(there is a trail on top).

aglossDSC_8086 aglossDSC_8097 aglossDSC_8120 aglossDSC_8156

We did not make it to the very end of the trail since we were loosing light fast.

I always think of a Louis Lamour book called “The Haunted Mesa” when I am on top of Gloss Mountain.

As the light faded that book seemed to come to life.

It is not set in this location but reminds me of it.

So yes, I shared with my boys that I felt like I was going to be transported to another world.

aglossDSC_8172

My younger boy analizes everything and let me know that there are other worlds in a way.

Heaven.

I miss talks and moments like this, we don’t have them as often anymore.

aglossDSC_8194

My favorite hike was the next morning.

aglossDSC_8210

We all went up before heading home.

aglossDSC_8212 aglossDSC_8221

This place is always amazing.

aglossDSC_8223_01 aglossDSC_8224 aglossDSC_8240 aglossDSC_8243 aglossDSC_8246 aglossDSC_8248 aglossDSC_8249 aglossDSC_8251 aglossDSC_8256 aglossDSC_8266

Oklahoma skies showing off.

aglossDSC_8271 aglossDSC_8272

Trying to get everyone in.

aglossDSC_8279 aglossDSC_8285 aglossDSC_8288 aglossDSC_8293

Finally went to the end!

Also, don’t fall off…

aglossDSC_8297

Keep in mind that you are hiking on top of a mesa so drop offs everywhere.

aglossDSC_8304

It makes for a beautiful hike though.

aglossDSC_8309 aglossDSC_8314 aglossDSC_8316 aglossDSC_8321 aglossDSC_8322

Heading back down! You can actually see our camper in the parking lot below!

aglossDSC_8324

Minutes after driving down the road our awning ripped off our rv.

What would an rv trip be without a little added challenge?

aIMG_20170924_114533

If you bend an awning in half it will fit into your rv!

Good information to know.

You are welcome.

Here is a short video of our weekend.
