Camping on the Rio Grande

I was pretty disappointed after visiting the Upper Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument that we were not camping up there.

I just could not figure out how to fit it in this trip.I had planned on us heading south to a campground that I only knew about from some references on google maps.

After looking into it more I realized it was also a part of Rio Grande Del Norte, it was just the lower part!

It was called Pillar campground and had water and electric hookups!

We had not had either of those for 3 nights so it was a nice change.

It was not as pretty as the ones in the upper part but it was still a nice surprise.

While staying there we drove on a crazy “road” up to the Gorge Bridge.

It was pretty but there were a lot of people and not really my cup of tea.

My friend actually stayed the night at the rest stop there and talks more about it in her post!

We also went for this hike on the La Vista Verde trail on our way back to our campsite and it was so pretty. I was not ready to leave this area at all and wanted to stay longer but we only had two weeks so we started heading further south the next day and got to see one of the main things I went to see.

Robbers Cave State Park ~Wilburton, OK

I started working on this post at the beginning of the week but colds and allergy scares have hit hard this week.
So what can you do if you are worried about your child having an allergic reaction to something?

My best advice would be to carry a small first aid kit with you that has some children’s benadryl tablets in it.

It might buy you enough time to get help.

I carry it with me everywhere and it helps put my mind at ease.

My twins have some pretty bad allergies and while camping we have had some reactions pop up.

We do have epi-pens for them but benadryl has thankfully been enough so far.

I carry a small backpack with me on hikes like this so an epi-pen or benadryl is always close by.

I am glad that we can be prepared but still go on fun adventures like Robber’s Cave. This place is a great stop for adventure loving kids. Our camping spot was directly across from the path to the nature center which was nice! I like camping at places with natures centers(or museums nearby) and hiking paths.

It gives us some options on keeping the kids busy in different weather.

Robber’s cave has some fun boat rentals also.

Always something to work on when we take longer trips. This park is unique because of the amazing climbing it has. There are several trails to get to the cave and they range from very difficult to pretty easy. My boys of course wanted to take the hardest path.I might have gotten stuck once or twice. At the nature center. Our pretty spot.Back to the rock climbing.GoofA place like this terrified me when my boys were little and we still made sure to keep a close eye on all the kids and a tight hold on our littlest hand. There was a boy scout troop there when we were though and they were all just running around climbing like crazy. So maybe I am just paranoid. There are steep drop offs though so if you have little ones that is something to keep in mind. The CCC trail is about difficult but not the hardest way to the cave. This is the easiest way that I know off.

Still a bit of climbing at the end.

Great way to finish our trip last month!

Here is a video I made of our trip!

We went camping for Christmas!

We wanted to do a trial camping trip with our new puppy but wanted to stay pretty close to home in case it went badly.

Osage Hills State Park was a perfect choice!

It was not very far away from our house and is a favorite hiking spot for us.

In fact my oldest went on his first hike there when he was one month old!

There were only a few other people camping so we had a huge area for the kids to play.
Milo did great on his first camping trip and loved hiking!

We saw so many Armadillo that I didn’t even look anymore when one of the kids yelled they saw one.

Ha

While up that way we went to the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.

So many Bison and some beautiful hiking trails!

We went to see Christmas Lights in Bartlesville at Johnstone Park.

We did a lot of hiking.

And we checked out the Hulah Lake Wildlife Management Area and Wha Sha She Park(used to be state park).

We did not hit the WMA at the best time of day so I did not see much.

And the park was kind of run down with not much there.

They were both in pretty areas though.

We headed home on Christmas Eve after one more hike. I think if I had a tradition for the holidays it would be hiking and camping.

Now I just need to convince my kids to go on a Christmas hike every year…
