War of 1812

Last month we learned about the War of 1812.

Here are some of the books we used.

The Town that Fooled the British and The Battle for Saint Michaels are about the same event.

It is about a town that hung lanterns above their houses so the British ships would fire to high.

They saved the town.

It is an amazing piece of history and both books were really well written so I did not mind reading about it twice!

I had my oldest read The Battle for Saint Michaels for his reading.

I was really excited to introduce the boys to the story behind the Star Spangled Banner!

It is a piece of history that really stuck with me when I was a child and made the song come to life.

The Star Spangled Banner Illustrated by Peter Spier has pictures to go along with the song.

I was really wanting a book that did that so the boys would see what the words were saying.

We also listened to the Audio story about it from Adventures in Odyssey’s American History series.

SO GOOD!!!

I cried…

I do not remember hearing the story of Jean Laffite before.

It is amazing.

The pictures are beautiful and the story well written.

It also introduced the boys to Andrew Jackson so I really liked that.

Do you have any favorite books on the War of 1812?

The only downside of learning about this war and the Revolutionary War is my sons think the British are evil.

It is really hard to explain big pictures and something being a long time ago to a 5 and 6yr old!

I am hoping they do not attack someone when they say they are British…

I forgot!

I found this really good site with a great game for kids to play about the war of 1812!

Check it out!

Our Flag Was Still There

Revolutionary War books for kids

Let it begin here was amazing and powerful.

Paul Revere’s Ride has beautiful illustrations to go along with the poem.

The Scarlet Stocking Spy makes me cry.

For God and Country is an amazing audio series that makes you feel like you were there. It made me cry also…

It covers more then just the Revolutionary War, we will be using it throughout the rest of the school year.

Revolutionary War on Wednesday is another well done piece of historical fiction by Mary Pope Osborne.

She really makes history come alive for kids!

There are resources to go along with her books to supplement your lessons.

On the Magic Tree House site.

At mthclassroomadventures.org.

I did not use these lesson plans to go along with the book this time because I had enough for my boys to do but I am definitely keeping these in mind for later!

There are so many more great pieces of historical fiction for the revolutionary war, I am just sharing some of my favorites.

Do you have a favorite historical fiction for kids?

Great books were meant to be shared!

Homeschooling ~Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is tomorrow.

It might be odd that I am taking time out of cleaning and baking to do a homeschooling post but I needed a break…

I was planning on only a couple books about the pilgrims.

Then every book I requested at our local library came in at the same time…

Oops.

We have not read all of these yet and I am not sure if we will.

I am kind of tired of the whole pilgrim’s first thanksgiving story.

Our favorites though are:

The Magic Tree House “Thanksgiving on Thursday”

Imagination Station “Problems in Plymouth” (similar to the magic tree house)

“You wouldn’t want to sail on the Mayflower” (We have loved all of the books in this series so far)

I liked “The pilgrims before the mayflower”, it gave a different part of the story that you do not hear as often.

The only one of these that we have read is the one on Squanto.

My oldest read it.

I try to get him several books to read in the subject we are learning about.

We made thankfulness books.

I had them draw a picture of something they were thankful for then write what it is.

Please ignore the fact I spelled “thankfulness” wrong…

Oy.

Since we will be spending the rest of the school year learning about the United States I made a map to add states to as we learn about them.

I did it the hard way.

I really like it though so it is okay.

Okay, breaks over.

I should get back to my cleaning and baking!

Have a blessed Thanksgiving surrounded by those you love!
