We started to see a lot of Egrets and Heron’s.

Then the boys started to run loudly and I despaired of seeing any wildlife.

Their loud running ended up disturbing a nesting site for Heron’s.

landing

I did not even know they nested in groups.

It was one of those awe inspiring moments.

Sometimes it is months between seeing anything remarkable while hiking and canoeing.

Western Trails at Heyburn Lake, OK

maddie2

Sheppherds point on Heyburn Lake has many trails to choose from but some of them like the western trails are not open during hunting season because they are in a Wildlife Management Area.

run

We were in between huntings seasons a few Saturdays ago so I wanted to hike before the trails west were cut off again.

northtrail

We took the North Trail to get to them.

mud

The low places were a little muddy so going up or down hills was pretty interesting.

trail

YAY!

grass

The grass was pretty tall and close to the trail so I would imagine chiggers and ticks a problem in the summer.

nick

We took our dog Maddie along so she could get some exercise.

tongue

She got worn out pretty fast.

done

We ended up leaving her and Nick near the road before we were done.

She just could not handle it.

I finished the hike with the boys and drove back on the road to pick them up.

All together we did over 5 miles.

It was great to go on a trail that is close to us that we have not already done several times!

Heyburn Lake, OK

run

We went to Heyburn Lake for a hike on the day after Thanksgiving.

These boys had a lot of energy to burn.

turn

hunting

The Wildlife Management Area is open to hunting so that part of the trail is closed certain times of the year.

There are still trails to hike that are within the park though.

watertrail

We took the trail down to the lake.
