Creation Study ~Day 2 Atmosphere

wallchart2 “Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” ” Genesis 1:6

wallchart

For our day 2 study we learned about the different layers of the earths atmosphere and what happens in each one.

The wall chart above is called “the big book of earth” it has some great illustrations for earths atmosphere as well as a simple explanation of what it is.

I also leaned heavily on this site. It explains things that go on in each layer.

exosphere2

For the Exosphere we read about it being on the very edge of earths atmosphere and that sometimes satellites orbit there.

Thermosphere- aurora borealis, we watched a couple of great videos showing it. Look for a time lapse video of it. The international space station orbits within the thermosphere so we looked into that also. NASA kids site has some information about who is in the space station right now!

Mesosphere- meteor showers

Stratosphere-lighting sprites, ozone layer, weather balloons

Troposphere-clouds

We also did many air experiments that we found in a book called “the Usborne book of science activities Volume two”. It has been such a great resource I decided to buy the other volumes!

I am sure you could find many air experiments online also.

The boys loved this experiment with matches. We did it over and over! The more matches the better! You can find out why the water fills the jar, here.

I recommend putting a couple drops of food coloring in the water. Don’t mix it. You can watch the water current as it moves into the jar.

I had the the boys draw a picture to sum up what we learned about each layer, then I would hang it up on our door.

I had grand plans of making each one a different shade of blue and really pretty. Then I realized I would have to go out and by paper in order to do that. I stuck with the cheap option and used what we had.

All of my oldest’s pictures include Lex Luther trying to destroy something in the picture…

In one he is trying to destroy the ozone layer!

Boys are awesome.

I am doing this post on the road so it is difficult to include links to all the sites I used. If you want to see more of my resources you can check out my creation study folder at Pinterest.

Day 1 Light, Day & Night

Day 3 Dry land & Plants

What my boys are reading.

reading

I am trying to do inventors biographies this year for my 7yr old’s school reading.

Considering we are only 3 weeks in and he has almost finished my book list this might not be possible!

There are some on the list that did not look as interesting in person as they did online so he is not reading those though.

He has really enjoyed learning about different inventors and it has helped him see things a totally different way!

reading2

These are some of my 5yr old’s books.

I did an online test at sonlight to make sure I was getting the right level and it put him at a 2nd grade reading level.

So these might be a little hard for some 1st graders.

readingHe is really liking the “Mouse and Mole” books!

They are cute to listen to also!

I will try to share a quick look into what we are reading throughout the school year.

I know how hard it is to find quality reading books for kids!

Creation Study ~Day 1 Light, Day & Night

testing

“Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good;

and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.

So the evening and the morning were the first day.”

Genesis 1:3-5

case

For our science for the next 6 weeks(maybe 7) we are studying Scientific Creationism and a science subject to go with each day of creation.

Week 1 was the study of Day 1 so we studied light, Day and Night.

We are reading the corresponding lesson from the “Answers for Kids curriculum” as well as “Case for a Creator for Kids“.

This is our second time reading the Case for a Creator, my boys are getting so much out of it this time around!

creation playdough

I let the boys play with playdough sometimes while I read.

There is a nice Creation Study Unit on this site that I have been using as a reference also.

lightbook lightbookinside

The Max Axiom book “The illuminating world of Light” is a great way to introduce the subject.

The Magic Schoolbus show has a great episode on light called “Makes a rainbow”.

We got the “Bending Pencil” experiment from here.

Experimenting with how things effect light.

Bending light experiment.

reflect reflect2

Reflecting light.

Sciencekids has a really good section on light with experiments also.

We did there experiment on absorbing heat and the boys loved it!

I just forgot to take any pictures…

My oldest read Children’s biographies on Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein.

I would like to say it was intentional on my part that these went along with our lesson but it was complete serendipity.

I love when that happens.

My son and I like the Graphic Novel Biographies best.

They are colorful and look like comic books!

We are covering one Day of creation for a week.

Answersingenesis.org has a great kids section so be sure to check them out for more info on Creation!

Let me know if you have any questions!
