A Treasure Hunt!

I was supposed to get this done last month when we were studying explorers…

Better late then never, right?

I had grand plans on putting together an elaborate treasure hunt for them but in reality I just woke up and wrote out directions.

I knew it was either now or never.

They had to know how to use a compass and what direction the sun sets and rises.

We have an animal tracks kit.

I wanted to use the littleĀ  footprints that came with it to make them in the ground but none of the footprints were showing up in our dirt.

I just laid it on top and gave up…

They still got it and enjoyed it so no big deal!

They found the treasure!

Yes, it is chocolate.

I find treasure and chocolate to be pretty much the same thing…

Don’t worry I kept some back for myself before putting it in the treasure box.

Vikings!!!

We are doing Explorers this month and I decided to start us out with Vikings!

We did not take Memorial Day off, instead we took a canoe out and I talked to the boys about exploring, why we would do it, and how.

They also watched some of the History Channels “Great Explorers” that we got from the library.

We learned about Navigation at the same time and with that we read a Max Axiom book about Magnetism.

A book we read that is not pictured is “Asgard Stories Tales from Norse Mythology” that I downloaded for free on my kindle.

We only read one story out of it but I really enjoyed it.

I have always liked mythology and the boys are in love with Thor so it worked out really well for us!

I got the idea for them to draw their own compass from my friend, here.

It really helped the boys remember directions.

I found the instructions for how to make your own compass on one of my favorite sites!

How Stuff Works!

We also used my husband’s Iphone app Sky View to find where the North star would be. (It was not dark enough before the boys bedtime to see it)

To end the week we went for a hike and I brought two compasses for the boys.

They had to find our way in and out and could only tell me where to go using North, South, East, or West.

Or NW,SW,SE,NE, ect…

I had them stop about half way through and pretend they did not have a compass.

They had to tell me how they would get us home using the sun.

It was early morning so it was pretty easy to tell which way was east and west.

Then I asked them what we could use to make there own compass if we needed one in the woods and did not have one.

A frictionless surface(like water).

Something that floats(like bark).

A piece of metal(like a needle).

A magnet.

My son thought we should make one right then and take apart my camera to see if there was a magnet inside!

I told him no.

He said survivorman uses whatever he has to make what he needs…

If we are in a survival situation I might(might) give up my camera.

Maybe.

School ~Week 4

We usually work on a subject for a month so we were finishing everything up this week.

This is to show what a lung looks like as you inhale and exhale.

You push on the bottom and the “lung” deflates.

Then we did an experiment to see if we had different lung capacities.

Both of these came from the Magic School bus Kit.

You fill a 2 liter bottle(pretend that is what I used) with water.

Put the cap back on it and put it in a bowl full of water.

Take the cap back off and put the hose inside the bottle.

Then blow into the other end of the hose.

Your air displaces the water in the bottle.

The boys could have done this all day!

I was a really nice mother and let them play with it for a long time since it was the last project of the day.

The sacrifices I make…

I of course had to get on the computer while they played.

I also decided the boys needed a fun writing project.

I gave them stickers, two little books I made, and told them to tell a story with the stickers.

After they had put the stickers they wanted in the book they had to write a story for them.

I was going to have my four year old only write the front cover and then just tell me what to write but he said it was his book so he should write in it.

Okay, then…

The teacher in me loved that he wanted to do it all himself, the mom, not so much.

It took a LONG time!

My five year old never asked me how to spell a single word.

I love those misspelled words pushed all together.

They both did a great job!

And learned that writing is a lot of fun!

I bought this game at Mardel’s when I was looking for school books.

It is fantastic!!!

We had fun just putting all the body parts on.

We called all of them by their names so it was a great learning experience!

We are officially done with the human body and moving on to Explorers next month!
