Curriculum 2019-2020

Here is what we are using for Kindergarten, 3rd, and 8th grade this year!
For Kindergarten this year I am trying out Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

I have never used it before but I knew with my fifth child I needed a plan to teach reading.

She has known all of her letter sounds for a while now but that is as far as we have gotten.

Hopefully this book will help make it easier for both of us.

I am still using Handwriting Without Tears for now but might start using something else.

The program did not work well for my twins because they needed that structure the third line adds and they struggle with making their letters the right size now.

We are also not all that happy with their cursive program and are leaning towards a more traditional style for that.

I went back and forth between RightStart and McRuffy Color Math for her math but in the end RightStart won.

McRuffy is a lot easier for me to teach but RightStart just teaches number sense so well!

So she is doing RightStart Level A this year and it will be my third time teaching it!

I got God’s Design for Science Plants for Beginners for both my Kindergartener and my 3rd grade twins this year.

I am finding my old way of making it up as I go is just too difficult while keeping up with 5 so I am buying more curriculum this year than normal.

They can’t usually all be in the same space to learn though so I might have just set myself up to teach this three times a day…

3rd Grade

I am going to continue using The Good and the Beautiful Level One for reading for the twins.

We don’t do some of the grammar in it as well if I feel it is helpful but none of the spelling.

I printed out my own practice pages for writing and might be using PreScripts Cursive Letters and Coloring World History if I decide to teach them cursive this year.

They are also doing All About Spelling Level 2 this year.

I love how All About Spelling teaches spelling.
We switched from RightStart to McRuffy Color Math halfway through the year last year so we still need to finish up the Second Grade book this fall.

I think RightStart does some stuff better but McRuffy is a lot easier for me to teach and the girls have been doing better with it so we will stick with this for now.

I have not been real happy with 1st Language Lessons for a while and have been keeping an eye out for an alternative.

The Winston Grammar Program is supposed to be hands on and less teacher intensive.

I also got a hands on grammar book that I might take from during the year.

I will be getting library books for history and geography as needed.

8th Grade

The boys are doing Masterbooks General Science 1 this year!

It started with them not knowing much about how tornadoes are formed and my oldests love of minerals.

We are pretty excited about this curriculum.

We started Masterbooks Biblical Archaeology later in the year last year so they still have a ways to go on that.

That will put us at the time of Jesus and I am still deciding what we will use next.

I have enjoyed Masterbooks though.

So far Biblical Archaeology has had a lot of geography included also.

We are using these Spencerian Penmanship books for the boys handwriting to try to improve their cursive.

The rest of their curriculum is online.

Grammar is Brave Writer

Math is VideoText although I am really looking forward to moving on. We are going to try Teaching Textbooks Geometry next I think.

I need something with more help for them and less checking work for me.

They will be continuing Duolingo for spanish and Khan Academy for programming.

I am trying to keep it simple this year but might add more as the year goes on!

Curriculum 2018-2019

My 4yr old really wants to do “school” like the big kids so I have some time set aside to work with her every morning this year!

So this year I will be teaching two 7th graders, two 2nd graders, and one PreK.

We school year-round.

PREK

These are the workbooks I got for my PreK girl.

My First School Book” is from Handwriting without Tears(which I have used for all of my kids).

The “Montessori Method” workbooks are from Target(online) but I have heard you can get them at Zulily sometimes also.

The “Geography” workbook I got because I was needing something easy to give me ideas on what to do for geography.

Most of these are to help me find a good jumping off place for our lesson that day.

With 5 kids I just feel like I go blank sometimes!

Typically with my 4yr old I do one subject a day.

Science, Social Studies, Handwriting, Reading, Math.

I then work with her for about 10-15mins with a workbook, lesson, or reading a book.

Next I set up some learning play activity, like sensory bins, puzzles, or playdough that goes with what we are learning. I have some other workbooks that she can do with her brothers also. I love these Montessori board books!

2nd grade

For my twins that are in 2nd grade I am using a lot of the same things from last year.

Spelling

We are about half-way through All About Spelling Level 1 so we will probably start Level 2 after Christmas.

I have used this program with 4 children now and I still really like it.

Spelling with the tiles seems to make it easier for the younger ones.

Instead of doing it all on paper.

I love that it teaches the rules for phonics and spelling also!

Grammar

I really liked “First Language Lessons” for my boys but have not liked it as much for my twins.

It is still a good program but since a lot of the teaching talks about kids having one mom and one dad and so forth, it does not pertain to our family anymore now that we have adopted.

I might be switching to something else after we finish this book.

Math

RightStart Mathematics Level C it is a VERY hands on program so if you have one that is a kinesthetic learner this might work well for them.

Reading

I have found that most readers move up too quickly for my twins so I bought(I did not buy the bridge book that was one my used for us) several in the same grade and we switch between them.

From the left;

The Good and the Beauitful Level One

Abeka “Strong and True

Abeka “Aesop’s Fables” (love the stories in this)

Abeka “The bridge book”

History & Science

We are starting our timeline study over at the beginning so creation!

If you want to know more about how I teach by timeline click here.

I will be using books we have, the bible, and books from the library for these subjects.

7th grade

Math

videotextonline.com(this is not hands on at all)

Grammar

Brave Writer(I buy the individual boomerangs)

Programming

Khan Acadamy(a free educational site)

Typing

typing.com

Spelling

All About Spelling Level 7(the last one, the boys will have done the whole program!)
Science

This is our first year using a science curriculum!

I needed something that would help me with testing and records so I am trying this series this year.

Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology Pack, 7th-8th Grade, 3 Volumes

History, Science, Literature

The boys will be studying Ancient History as well again with my girls.

They already have a science curriculum but I think I will still get them some books in what we are studying.

They will start out going through this book “The Genius of Ancient Man” as well as the study guides that go with it(bought seperately).

It covers ancient man from a creation standpoint and I am super excited that they are finally old enough to read it!

I tried to introduce it the last time(5yrs ago) we studied Ancient History but they were two young.

Literature

Books that go with the time period we are studying.

That was a long post!!!

If you got through all of that and have any questions let me know!

Curriculum 2017-2018

apengDSC_6541

Since we are doing year-round school now grades are a little less clear-cut than normal.

So this is the curriculum I will be using for my twins that are in 1st-2nd grade.

RightStart Math Level C (we are actually still finishing up level B right now)

All About Spelling Level 1

For Handwriting, I am making my own worksheets for the twins.

They have been doing Handwriting Without Tears but they need more repetition and practice.

So I made my own worksheets that still follow the same approach as the program.

For Grammar, I am trying to work on a Montessori approach.

I bought these stencils and made the shapes out of felt.

I am hoping that this more hands-on approach will make it easier for them.

For History, I get picture books that are in the same time period the boys are learning.

apengDSC_6539

I am using easy readers like Bob books and other phonics based books for the twins reading.

apengDSC_6532

Science is similar to the boys, I just get books that cover the time period or place we are learning about.

I do try to get hands on things to go with it if possible though.

abooksDSC_8592

The boys are both in 6th grade.

The boy’s math is not pictured here because it is all online.

They do VideoText.com and Khan Acadamy for math.

We have been doing both of those since last year and like it so far.

They also do;

All About Spelling Level 6(we started at level 1 and still really like it).

I am having them work through Spectrum Language Arts workbook this year for grammar.

I suppliment their history with Draw and Write through history and World Empires, World Missions, World Wars Activity Book with History Revealed.

We use the Draw and Write through History more than the other.

abooksDSC_8598

This is what the inside of the two books look like.

The History Revealed book has activity and books suggestions.

I mean to use it more than I do.

I just don’t seem to get around to it.

abooksDSC_8599

I have really liked the Draw and Write through History series.

It is a little too advanced for the girls yet though.

I liked the series called Draw Write Now for them but only have one book so far.

This is the inside of the Language Arts book and Spelling book.

abooksDSC_8601 abooksDSC_8602

I found this book filled with fact sheets on World War 1 for a really good deal and have really liked it.

I usually find free quizzes or crosswords online for the boys but this was so cheap and easy I could not pass it up.

abooksDSC_8603 abooksDSC_8604

I have some of these Professor Noggins quiz games to help the boys review what they have learned.

abooksDSC_8605

This is an example of how many books I bought for our current study.

I rely heavily on library books for the boy’s History, Science, and Geography.

I also bought a few ebooks to go with our current study.

 abooksDSC_8624

For handwriting practice, I have the boys do copywork from our current study.

For example, speeches from World War 1 or poetry from that time period.

I tie the different subjects together by timeline and keep track of it on a spreadsheet.

This is what we covered over the last year.

It is constantly changing.

If I see something interesting I would like to cover than I find a place to add it in.

I like that I can just add in things we maybe missed to catch the next time around.

I don’t stick to a set schedule on how long each study will take.

It mostly depends on interest level and amount of materials to cover.
