Lawton, Ok

We got up at 4:30am on a Saturday morning so we could get to Lawton, Ok (three hours away) before the heat was too bad.

It was funny, I was driving at one point and lamenting the fact that we did not get up even earlier so I could have been hiking instead of driving as the sky began to turn soft with early morning light.

I am aware that I am odd.

First stop was the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.

This is the site we were greeted with.

Fire.

A little concerned but unsure if this would change our plans we made our way to the visitor center.

They told us the road was closed to the hiking trail we wanted to take because of the fire.

So we headed back the way we came a little bit and drove to the top of Mt. Scott.

It was really beautiful in the early morning light.

View from the top.

The differences between my two boys is sometimes really easy to see.

My oldest, “I WANT TO GET DOWN!”

They were not even that high. This is just boulder and very far away from the edge.

This one loved it and thought it was really cool to be so high.

I “let” Nick take the lead when I failed to notice a rattlesnake on the trail.

Yes, I was the awesome mother that led her children right next to a poisonous snake.

I was even LOOKING for them!

I did not really trust myself with their safety after that.

We enjoyed the Longhorn’s and Bison roaming around the refuge.

There are supposed to be elk and other animals but we did not see any this trip.

We went on the only trail that was open.

It was a bicycle trail, I would not really recommend hiking it.

It was nice but a little monotonous.

We were going to hike the Bison Trail before the fire changed our plans.

I am hoping to go again soon so we can hike that one.

When we were done with our hike we headed into Lawton to visit The Museum of the Great Plains.

It is the only museum on the Oklahoma Museum Network that we have not visited so I wanted to be sure and get it in while we were in the area.

I really liked their outdoor exhibits.

This fort was really neat.

This guy was awesome!

A teachers dream come true.

He was more passionate about history then I am!

He loved telling the boys everything.

He actually talked so much they were all out of questions!

That never happens.

He wanted them to touch everything.

Love it!

The inside was a little less kid friendly then I originally thought it would be.

Lots of static exhibits.

It was still interesting though.

They did have a little section for kids but it was mostly geared towards older kids.

The boys did love the Lego race track!

I got to see prairie dogs!

I was so excited to see them just hanging out right outside the museum.

I think they are pretty common around there because I was the only person going crazy about them.

We headed back to the Refuge to check on the status of the fire and to go to the nature center but they had closed the road to the visitor/nature center while we were gone.

I guess the fire had spread?

We were able to end on a nice tranquil note.

I hope that the rain we are now getting is helping to put out the fires down there. I know that area has been hit pretty hard with fire this summer.

If you in the area check out the Wildlife Refuge!

RSU Conservation Trail~ Claremore, OK

The Rogers State University in Claremore has a 120 acre nature conservatory with trails that is open to the public.

I decided to go with my boys and check it out.

It ended up being a beautiful morning and not too hot!

Seeing this guy off the bat was a good sign I thought.

I took pictures of the trails so you would know what to expect.

There are some trails through grass that you can take so I would bring bug spray or wear pants if you want to take those.

A lot of them look like this.

Most are pretty short and easy so young children should not have a problem.

This is the wetlands area but since it has been so dry in Oklahoma lately there was no water.

I would like to go back when we have had some rain.

We saw egrets, ducks, and turtles at the pond.

We also saw a lot of deer!

My oldest did not want to leave, he thought we should see more animals since they seemed to be around every corner.

They have a lot of really nice signs to help you out.

I would love to go back.

It was an awesome education reserve and a beautiful walk.

If you live in the area you should definitely check this one out!

Itasca State Park, MN

While on vacation a little while ago (okay a month, I am taking a really long time to put up post), my husband and I went up to Itasca State Park in Minnesota.

This was an awesome trip because:

1. We were only a little over an hour away.

2. My Mother in-law watched my two little rascals!

We were ALONE! YAY!

I missed them.

I am kind of nutty like that.

In case you did not know (I did not until I married my husband), the headwaters of the Mississippi is located in the Itasca State Park.

It is a tradition to walk across the headwaters so you can say you walked across the Mississippi, I did not.

My husband tried to get me to but I had just seen a lady wipeout and I did not want to be next.

If I had brought the boys with me I would have done it.

They give me courage.

And a reason to look foolish.

I should have done it.

It was misting the whole time we walked out to the headwaters which was nice because it was a little warm, it makes for nice saturated pics,

and it kept the mosquito count in the millions instead of trillions.

They really love me too.

It is no doubt because of my sweet personality.

This was on the floor of the building that gives a little history of the area.

I love it.

I want one.

My darling husband would make it for me, right?

Right?

This is an old fire watchtower.

When I saw it I gulped because of the stairs.

All of those stairs…

My mind and body protested because they still remembered this hike I had put them through the week before.

“No more climbing” my poor legs said.

Or was that Nick?

In all of my thinking about the stairs and the climb I forgot something rather important.

I am afraid of heights…

Something one should take into consideration before climbing to the top of a 100ft tower.

In the rain.

I am pretty stubborn though so I kept climbing, albeit with a death grip on the railing.

Such a pretty view.

It had really started to rain so we made our way down.

Harder then going up but I made it.

Or did I?

It started to POUR.

I do not mean a refreshing little rain.

I mean barely talk it is going to wash me away rain.

So I started doing what this type of rain always does to me.

Laughing.

Twirling.

Laughing some more.

Not light sweet laughter but from the gut I have lost it laughter.

I felt about eight years old and looked like it.

My husband has not seen this side of me that often and was giving me odd looks from a distance.

I did not care, it made me laugh even more.

Rain just has this power over me to make me want to sing and dance and play.

I was drenched and so happy.

I have stopped laughing now so you do not have to worry.

Visit the park if you are in the area and laugh once for me.
