What we bring on a hike

happy

On shorter hikes we bring water if anything.

Otherwise this Kelty Hydration Pack is my go to pack.

I used to use the bladder with it every time but got tired of trying to keep it clean so I have not put the bladder in for a long time.

boys

The pack on the left is a hydration pack as well and fits my boys really well.

It has thick straps that have padding, that is really important for comfort.

My oldest Kelty back pack just has those thin black straps with no padding and it gets uncomfortable really fast.

backpacks

I got both of these packs at Academy Sports.

Neither one was made for children but they both work for my boys.

The green one fits the best on them.

inside

Instead of a bladder I like to use one of these Platypus bottles, it lays flat so it does not dig into your back but it is easier to clean.

I also just put regular water bottles in them.

firstaid

For longer hikes it is nice to have some extra sunscreen(for when you missed  a spot), bug spray, and a first aid kit.

I try to buy the smallest possible of these so I am not adding a lot of extra weight.

This Adventure Medical Kit is really nice and is my favorite first aid kit we have bought so far!

It has everything you might need but is really light.

If I am hiking alone with my boys I make sure I have mace on me as well and text my husband letting him know where we are hiking, how long we will be going, and when I will text him letting him know we are done.

I always bring more water than I think we will need and if  we are going for a long hike I bring a snack.

Something high in protein like nuts is nice to have.

I hope this helps someone that is trying to figure out what to bring hiking with them!

Have fun out there!

Here are other hiking tips I have posted:

Hiking in the Rain at Ray Harral

We got hit with some amazing, cool, rainy, weather last week!

I took the boys to Ray Harral Nature Park one day when it was raining with no lighting.

In case you are wondering how I took pictures in the pouring rain, I used a modified ziplock bag.

Like this one on Instructables.

I am thinking I might need to move to Oregon or Washington.

Do you live where it rains a lot?

Day 3~Mount Magazine State Park, Paris, AR

On the last day of our stay in Arkansas we packed up and headed to Mount Magazine State Park on the way home.

mountmagazine

It was very foggy and raining.

baby

We decided to go ahead and stop at the visitors center though and see if we wanted to do a hike while it was not thundering.

mist

I love the woods like this.

So beautiful.

Usually it is easier to see animals also.

deer

We decided on doing the Signal Hill hike since it was short and went to the highest point in Arkansas.

iphone

I only took pictures of the hike with my phone since my camera was tucked away.

The top three are from my phone.

It was raining pretty good at the start but then started pouring!

It was nice to at least have a bug free hike.

mag

We all like hiking in the rain.

plague

Nick said they needed a picture with the plaque that says it is the highest point.

I did not do this.

atthetop

There was only one other person on the trail but he took a picture for us!

I did take my camera out for these shots at the top.

It got a little wet but dried out just fine.

I would like to visit this place again when we can see more of the views.

We had a great trip though and I am so glad we went!
