Fingerprint Tree Art

I knew when I saw this that I wanted to do one with my boys!

And since they hate to get messy it was a real struggle to convince them to dip their fingers in paint.

Right…

First I sketched out a tree.

I just did a google search for tree sketches to be inspired in the design, you could copy one or even find a coloring page to use.

I tried to not put too much work into this sketch since I knew that the boys might decided to ruin it and smear the whole thing with paint.

I used acrylic paint for the “leaves” but you could use an ink pad.

I used one color of  green acrylic and then just added a little bit of white, yellow and “gasp” black(my art teacher would not be happy with me) to get the different shades.

I had the boys each do a side of the tree so as to keep the process peaceful.

Not that my boys would ever fight over something like painting…

They are practically perfect in every way.

I love works of fiction, don’t you?

I then had them use toothpicks to add grass, I thought it needed something on the bottom but you would not have to do this.

I like toothpicks because it is hard to go crazy with them, you only can do a little bit of paint at a time.

My oldest loved mixing the colors the most.

Done!

I can’t wait to hang it in my livingroom!

Gingerbread Shack

The wonderful Christmas tradition of making a gingerbread house seemed like WAY too much work for me!

Then I saw a display of graham crackers in the checkout line!

Yes, those displays are put there for impulse buyers just like me.

They are so nice to do that for me.

I had never seen gingerbread graham crackers before so I picked it up and looked on the back to see instructions on how to make gingerbread houses out of graham crackers!

My boys are deprived having never had the joy of decorating a gingerbread house so I thought I would give it a try.

On another note, I have never made a gingerbread house before!

What happened there Mom? How could you rob me of such a timeless tradition?

Oh well, back to my boys.

I thought I followed the directions on how to make the glue (aka frosting) but somehow the water to powered sugar ratio was wrong.

I think my water must me thinner than their water…

gingerbread1After a lot of trial and error I finally got the frosting to a workable consistency and let the boys have at it.

gingerbread2I decided right away I wanted them to do as much as possible, even if it cost me the “perfect” gingerbread house.

They LOVED it!

My youngest’s concentration on putting those little candies on his house was so cute! gingerbread4

They did have a little trouble with the whole stick it on your house/shack not in your mouth.gingerbread3Don’t worry people, they had plenty of the leftover construction materials to eat.

I love their little shacks!

Dad got home just in time!

My oldest was really excited to show him his gingerbread house.gingerbread6

This is what it is supposed to look like in case you were wondering.

I think ours turned out better though…gingerbread7My oldest’s question as soon as we were done?

Can I eat it yet?

Look Ma no hands!

I made the mistake of looking at a bunch of really crafty websites today…

I kept thinking, why don’t I sew my own shirts? It looks pretty easy.

I easily forget how much my mother helped me on those sewing projects when I was a kid. I also tend to forget there were a lot of tears involved and they were not all mine.

I decided to take baby steps and finish(by finish I mean start) a project that I have been wanting to do for a couple weeks now. Piggybanks for the boys.

We recently went on a trip to Minnisota, then we turned around for another one. It’s complicated.

This left us with two empty Slim Jim containers.

Doesn’t everyone eat Slim Jim’s on long trips?

Like to the grocery store.

To buy more Slim Jim’s.

Anyway.

amapbankHere is one finished!

I used maps to decorate because their room is supposed to be travel themed.

I have never really finished it.

But now they have the piggy banks!

I let my oldest help with the gluing, my youngest would have helped if he had not chosen to throw a tricycle at his brother.

They are getting to big when they can start throwing bikes at each other.

amapThis is our handy Atlas that we have used for years. I told my husband that if we moved to a different state it would be perfect.

Oklahoma is the only map that is completely torn out.

Since we live in Oklahoma it makes navigating with this Atlas a little difficult.

But it makes this a perfect Atlas for crafting!

amapbank2The two finished map banks!

I am shocked they turned out so well!

Especially since I used them for target practice with my new slingshot.

This victory might have gone to my head a little bit.

I tried to sew something right after I finished these.

It was not pretty.

Maybe I will tell you about it sometime.
