Week 17 ~snakes and homemade board games

We picked the last big batch of radish pods from our garden. I actually pickled them which the kids liked but I am not sure about.

They are odd.
My youngest son has been on a game making streak!

They are all historical battle games so he has been researching like crazy.Basically he made his own history unit.

HaThe boards and game pieces are so impressive.
They are kind of like Risk and therefore hard for me to play… By the end of the day my brain feels fried so I am not a great opponent. I am enjoying stepping outside and checking on my garden more than taking the actual pictures but I am still at it.

Even when it is something I am not excited about like these blister beetles eating up what was left of my potatoes.

The pests have been intense in the garden right now.I am coating everything in Diatamacous Earth and it seems to be helping. At the lake my oldest girl decided to see what was under the dock and found a surprise 😉We watched him for a long time.

I use oksnakes.org to i.d. all these guys. Then while swimming at a local lake we had another snake to study! Both were harmless water snakes as far as I could tell but it is always a bit unnerving to see a snake where you are swimming…

Would you keep swimming if you saw a snake?

My boys did but I was done…

Turning 36

I hesitate to put my age out there, not because I don’t want you to know but because I am often wrong…

I am pretty sure that I am 36 though, maybe.

And here is how I spent my first day.

First stop was Mt. Magazine on our way home from our campsite. If I had it to do again I would have skipped this because it ended up being a long detour but I loved being on that mist covered mountain. Beautiful.

We went on the trail to the highest point in Arkansas.

The whole hike was so beautiful. Made it! Next up was the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge. This one was pretty close to our route home already but I was still not sure we should add even more to our trip especially with the weather turning cold and rainy.

But it ended up being stunning. So many birds! And the cloudy skies were so pretty for pictures. Can you believe this is in Oklahoma?

We did go for a walk on their walking path which was beautiful as always and freezing. We saw that one of my favorite bridges was broken.

Yikes

It was a pretty day.

What kinds of things do you like to do on your birthday?

Chahinkapa Zoo and Riding Mules

Nick’s parents have mules and a pony so riding lessons always happen while we visit! Milo was so spoiled while up there! My cute nephew!

Grandpa was sacrificed in the name of keeping girls entertained… Next up we went to the Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton.

We got a discount from our local zoo membership! It is a small zoo but actually has a lot to see! By the time anyone was even somewhat in the picture my second oldest was kind of done…

He smiled the first 5 times I tried though.

Ha My kids probably saw this same look from me several times while Nick was gone… Love watching these girls together. The girls decided to play gymnastics while up there and roped the two youngest into being students. This girl is crazy strong.

We kept the next day super light with a trip to a local park and I got to go pick up Nick from the airport alone!

I was so happy he was back!

And I was happy he would be there to get kids to go back to sleep that night!
