Philbrook Museum of Art ~Tulsa, OK

philbrook

The boys and I visited the Philbrook on the museums free day(Second Saturday of every month).

They have a fun kids program going on that day!

The kids get art supplies and they have a scavenger hunt in their outdoor area!

This is the scavenger hunt and the art box they received for free!

We did the rubbing’s one.

You find an object on the list, like this one and find the stone nearby.

rock

Then you make a rubbing of it.

It was a great way to tour the gardens!

If you are going to do the scavenger hunt I would recommend getting their right when they open and going to the middle of the museum where the table is located for it.

We did the gardens first then went inside to look at the art.

I have to admit to being a little disappointed when I got inside.

I felt the fun ended for the kids when you stepped inside the doors.

I was not going to drag my kids from room to room like I saw others doing.

I wanted them to see art!

And “gasp” enjoy it…

We went back into the main entrance and I started looking to see if they had any info cards for their art.

When I came up empty I went into the gift shop and bought post cards of the art.

I really think art museums should have scavenger hunts for the kids on the inside!

We used the postcards for our scavenger hunt and the boys really enjoyed it.

Another good idea is playing ispy!

I often told the boys ispy a horse or something else when we stepped into a new room and made them find it.

They have to look at all the art to find what you saw!

I made my own scavenger hunt for the next time we go.

Here is the list I came up with for a scavenger hunt at this museum:

1. A Shepherdess

2. A cowboy

3. A horse

4. The Grand Canyon

5. A stormy Sea

6. A basket

7. Jesus

8. A weapon

9. A statue

10. Pottery

11. A dog

Make sure to stop at the gift shop and get something small for them if they finish the list as a prize!

Some Museums have some of the works up online.

Look before you go at what they are displaying and make your own list!

I bet you will not have to drag your kids around from room to room.

Make learning fun!

  1. Check out their backpacks for some fun stuff inside–not sure if they have those out on the free days, though, since I’m sure they’re so crowded. They do have them normally, though, and they have different themes. We haven’t ever gone on the free days because I try to avoid crowds, but when we go during the week I have found that the Philbrook staff is so friendly and helpful A couple of times the security guys have even turned on the lighted dance floor for my kiddos! : ) Gilcrease also has some fun cards, too!

    1. Thanks for the tip! I knew Gilcrease had backpacks but I did not know that Philbrook did! They did not say anything about them when I asked so they must not have them on those days. We liked Gilcrease a lot!
