About My Outdoor Blog

Hi! This is my blog for all things outdoors. My family loves hiking, camping, and canoing so I decided to start a blog where I could share our passion! I hope that this blog helps encourage you to get outside and enjoy where you live!

Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, MN

January 3rd, 2012

We visited the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge while up in Minnesota visiting family this Christmas.

On the friday before Christmas we went with my husbands parents, some of my nephew’s and my niece.

Be sure to visit the visitor center if you have kids.

They have a lot of stuff to touch and lot’s of buttons to push.

My husband and I decided to go back the next morning to hike the Old Indian Trail.

The brochure says that it is approximately 2 miles.

Our GPS said it was close to 3 miles.

It is a nice easy trail that goes through some beautiful woods.

Beaver Lodge.

We “had” to get out on the ice for a couple shots.

See, I needed this shot.

There are more trails to go on but some of them are only open Sept-Feb.

If you live in the area you really need to check this place out!

The animals are waiting for you to come see them!

Watching

December 14th, 2011

Do you ever get the feeling you are being watched?

Lost Valley Trail, Arkansas

November 18th, 2011

Located near Ponca, Arkansas the Lost Valley Trail was one of my favorite hikes that we did on a recent three day trip for my birthday.

It is part of the Buffalo National River Trail system.

It is perfect for children and a beautiful hike.

This was the second time we have hiked in lost valley.

Here is a picture from our first hike there in 2007.

That is my OLDEST in the pack!

It is about 2.1 miles total.

This is not the trail, they just have to take the hard way.

This one has hiking boots, they were supposed to be one his feet but somehow the ever present rain boots are what made the trip.

At the end of the trail is this cave and a waterfall.

This is a smaller waterfall and cave earlier on in the hike.

I did not go in on the way out but decided to on the way back.

Water reflections on the rock.

Fall is my favorite time to hike!

Get out and enjoy it!

Devil’s Den State Park, Arkansas

November 16th, 2011

I have wanted to go to Devil’s Den State Park for a couple years now, I had heard it had great hiking.

I finally made it out there and the best part was that a friend watched my boys!

That is right, just Nick and I.

This meant I wanted a harder hike. We do a lot of easier hikes with the boys.

We chose the Butterfield Hiking Trail.

It is a 15 mile backpacking trail that goes into the National Forest also.

Because it does not stay inside the park you have to fill out paperwork before hiking so head to the park office and be prepared with your license plate number.

It might take a while to fill out the paperwork. It took 20-30min. to get everything squared away for us.

It was a really busy day at the park though and the park ranger that helped us spent 15min talking about the trail.

We did finally get going though!

We obviously did not take the bridge across.

We did not do want to do the whole 15 mile loop so we cut across one of the horse trails.

The part of the Butterfield we hiked (northern section) was pretty rocky but the horse trail was extremely so.

Really hard on your feet.

We did about 6 miles and had a pretty good time.

I do not know if I will go to this park again any time soon because of all the hassle with the paperwork and the amount of people.

It was packed.

We did go on fall break weekend though.

Maybe if you went when the weather was not so nice or a weekday it would not be so crowded?

Once we got about a mile out we hardly saw anyone so the hike itself was pretty quiet.

If you go on the Butterfield be mindful that they are not always consistent with their trail blazes/markers.

Sometimes we just guessed which way to go.

All that said, it was a beautiful hike and I had I a great time ALONE with Nick!

Gloss Mountain State Park ~Oklahoma

October 24th, 2011

At the Gloss Mountain State Park.

There is a hiking trail that leads up on top of Cathedral Mountain.

The only difficult part of this hike is getting up the stairs. It is nice and flat after that.

The trail is under 2 miles in length and is the only trail that I know of in the park.

My little climbers.

Beautiful view.

My boys realized that mommy was too close to the edge.

I am klutzy, I think they have figured that out about me already.

I actually stayed far away from the edge. I have found that when I take a picture anywhere near a ledge I feel like I am falling.

Not a pleasant sensation.

I made them come back so Nick could carry my extra lens for me.

I am awesome like that…

Why is it that boys always find playing in dirt to be the highlight of any time spent outside?

We are on top of a Mountain (albeit a small one) and still they just want to dig in the dirt.

What is he looking at?

This little guy.

The poor little thing was scared.

The sunlight started to do amazing things.

I could have stayed up there until the sun was completely gone.

Of course, then I would be stuck on top of a mountain with a spider in the dark…

The plaque talked about the naming of the mountain and the confusion about the name.

I really enjoyed visiting this park.

That being said, it is a very short hike so for next time I will plan on doing other things in the area before going here.

Here is a list of a couple places I want to visit for the next time:

Great Salt Plains State Park

Sod House Museum

Little Sahara State Park

I loved being at the Gloss Mountains at sunset so I will probably save it for last.

Get out and enjoy where you live!

Oklahoma Scottish Festival 2011 ~Tulsa, OK

September 24th, 2011

There were a lot of events going on at this festival.

They had Scottish games going on most of the day.

These guys were just walking around playing.

I think this was called the hammer toss.

I felt out of place without a kilt on but my red hair made me feel like I fit in.

It is all about balance…

Lake Wedington Recreation Area, AR

September 21st, 2011

I was feeling a bit caged in so I asked my husband if we could make the long drive into Arkansas to hike.

I like the hiking that is closer to us but I needed mountains, forests, and maybe a little bit different.

We ended up at Lake Wedington after our first location ended up not being where I thought on the map and another 2hours away…

A little too far.

They have this really nice bike trail across the road from the park.

It is around 8miles long one way.

It is not a loop so you do have to retrace your steps to get back to the car.

I have read and saw the evidence while hiking (campsites and fire pits) that people do overnights here.

We only hiked a couple hours though.

I was in the mood for something a little harder but it ended up being a good hike.

Nick kept asking Justin what tree the trail blaze was on so he would have to run back and look.

The idea was for him to pay better attention and see them while hiking.

The trail was marked with blue blazes.

I made sure Nick took a picture of me, proof I do go on these hikes!

Gifts from my two little men.

We accendently took a detour on an old access road.

The trail goes off to the right and the road keeps going straight.

We ended up turning around to head back around here anyway.

I told the boys to try to not let the plants touch them.

It was pretty funny to watch.

Heading back to the SUV (I get in big trouble for calling it a car).

This little guy was hanging out on the trail and almost got stepped on.

Good thing I am always looking at the ground (I am afraid I will trip on stuff).

Nick says I am missing everything because I am not looking up but he missed this little guy and I saw him!

So there!

I just miss everything else…

Lawton, Ok

September 16th, 2011

We got up at 4:30am on a Saturday morning so we could get to Lawton, Ok (three hours away) before the heat was too bad.

It was funny, I was driving at one point and lamenting the fact that we did not get up even earlier so I could have been hiking instead of driving as the sky began to turn soft with early morning light.

I am aware that I am odd.

First stop was the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.

This is the site we were greeted with.

Fire.

A little concerned but unsure if this would change our plans we made our way to the visitor center.

They told us the road was closed to the hiking trail we wanted to take because of the fire.

So we headed back the way we came a little bit and drove to the top of Mt. Scott.

It was really beautiful in the early morning light.

View from the top.

The differences between my two boys is sometimes really easy to see.

My oldest, “I WANT TO GET DOWN!”

They were not even that high. This is just boulder and very far away from the edge.

This one loved it and thought it was really cool to be so high.

I “let” Nick take the lead when I failed to notice a rattlesnake on the trail.

Yes, I was the awesome mother that led her children right next to a poisonous snake.

I was even LOOKING for them!

I did not really trust myself with their safety after that.

We enjoyed the Longhorn’s and Bison roaming around the refuge.

There are supposed to be elk and other animals but we did not see any this trip.

We went on the only trail that was open.

It was a bicycle trail, I would not really recommend hiking it.

It was nice but a little monotonous.

We were going to hike the Bison Trail before the fire changed our plans.

I am hoping to go again soon so we can hike that one.

When we were done with our hike we headed into Lawton to visit The Museum of the Great Plains.

It is the only museum on the Oklahoma Museum Network that we have not visited so I wanted to be sure and get it in while we were in the area.

I really liked their outdoor exhibits.

This fort was really neat.

This guy was awesome!

A teachers dream come true.

He was more passionate about history then I am!

He loved telling the boys everything.

He actually talked so much they were all out of questions!

That never happens.

He wanted them to touch everything.

Love it!

The inside was a little less kid friendly then I originally thought it would be.

Lots of static exhibits.

It was still interesting though.

They did have a little section for kids but it was mostly geared towards older kids.

The boys did love the Lego race track!

I got to see prairie dogs!

I was so excited to see them just hanging out right outside the museum.

I think they are pretty common around there because I was the only person going crazy about them.

We headed back to the Refuge to check on the status of the fire and to go to the nature center but they had closed the road to the visitor/nature center while we were gone.

I guess the fire had spread?

We were able to end on a nice tranquil note.

I hope that the rain we are now getting is helping to put out the fires down there. I know that area has been hit pretty hard with fire this summer.

If you in the area check out the Wildlife Refuge!

Don’t even think about it.

August 30th, 2011

Or I will bust out my sumo moves…

RSU Conservation Trail~ Claremore, OK

August 10th, 2011

The Rogers State University in Claremore has a 120 acre nature conservatory with trails that is open to the public.

I decided to go with my boys and check it out.

It ended up being a beautiful morning and not too hot!

Seeing this guy off the bat was a good sign I thought.

I took pictures of the trails so you would know what to expect.

There are some trails through grass that you can take so I would bring bug spray or wear pants if you want to take those.

A lot of them look like this.

Most are pretty short and easy so young children should not have a problem.

This is the wetlands area but since it has been so dry in Oklahoma lately there was no water.

I would like to go back when we have had some rain.

We saw egrets, ducks, and turtles at the pond.

We also saw a lot of deer!

My oldest did not want to leave, he thought we should see more animals since they seemed to be around every corner.

They have a lot of really nice signs to help you out.

I would love to go back.

It was an awesome education reserve and a beautiful walk.

If you live in the area you should definitely check this one out!
