Gingerbread Shack

The wonderful Christmas tradition of making a gingerbread house seemed like WAY too much work for me!

Then I saw a display of graham crackers in the checkout line!

Yes, those displays are put there for impulse buyers just like me.

They are so nice to do that for me.

I had never seen gingerbread graham crackers before so I picked it up and looked on the back to see instructions on how to make gingerbread houses out of graham crackers!

My boys are deprived having never had the joy of decorating a gingerbread house so I thought I would give it a try.

On another note, I have never made a gingerbread house before!

What happened there Mom? How could you rob me of such a timeless tradition?

Oh well, back to my boys.

I thought I followed the directions on how to make the glue (aka frosting) but somehow the water to powered sugar ratio was wrong.

I think my water must me thinner than their water…

gingerbread1After a lot of trial and error I finally got the frosting to a workable consistency and let the boys have at it.

gingerbread2I decided right away I wanted them to do as much as possible, even if it cost me the “perfect” gingerbread house.

They LOVED it!

My youngest’s concentration on putting those little candies on his house was so cute! gingerbread4

They did have a little trouble with the whole stick it on your house/shack not in your mouth.gingerbread3Don’t worry people, they had plenty of the leftover construction materials to eat.

I love their little shacks!

Dad got home just in time!

My oldest was really excited to show him his gingerbread house.gingerbread6

This is what it is supposed to look like in case you were wondering.

I think ours turned out better though…gingerbread7My oldest’s question as soon as we were done?

Can I eat it yet?

  1. Awesome. I’ve been thinking about the whole gingerbread tradition too. My mom always went all out real gingerbread and everything with way more candy then should ever be in one house. She bought every variety that you could possibly be creative with. It’s a little bit of pressure but I think it will be okay if I go a little bit easier route.

  2. The kids did just a kit one at my moms house. C liked it more than T, but they still had fun and it turned out cute. It was fairly easy to assemble but required drying time before decorating. We just put it together and let it dry before we told them what we were going to do. Thinking about doing another one here.

  3. Yes you did put one together with graham crackers actually!! You were little so that is why you don’t remember!! Decorating sugar cookies was much easier so we did that every year instead!! Looks like you had a good construction crew!!! They did a great job!

  4. Sure Mom, you could say we did anything when I was small. I would never know if we did or not 🙂
