These cattle roam free on the refuge.

    Beautiful place.

I like to hike in the morning and evening.

    Beautiful light and cooler temps.

    amuseDSC_5249

As a photographer I think it is totally acceptable to ask that we only hike in the golden hour…

Nick took the big kids to finish the hike to the top.

Little bit and I hung out in this amazing spot with awesome views.

After this hike we ate lunch at the camper and went into town to go the Museum of the Great Plains.

Since this is already a long post, I will do a seperate post from the museum.

After visiting the museum we had vehicle trouble!

    amuseDSC_5676

We hung out in a car parts store parking lot for a while and had no clue if we would be able to drive home the next day.

Let alone make it back to the campground.

    amuseDSC_5679

We stopped at a nearby park to let kids run off energy and so Nick could research(our campsite did not have any cell service).

    amuseDSC_5685

After none of our efforts to find a shop to repair it or a reasonable rental that fits a family of 7 we headed back towards our campsite.

    amuseDSC_5702

It was an interesting twist to our vacation but gave me a glimpse into what full time travel might be like.

If you break down, you don’t know anyone around to help fix it.

    amuseDSC_5718

I was thankful for Nick offering to stop at a spot on the way back to the campsite.

Our vehicle was running rough but we made it back(it was a holiday weekend so our options were limited).

    amuseDSC_5727 amuseDSC_5729

This place just shows off at sunset.

    amuseDSC_5738 amuseDSC_5748

I had no clue what the next day would hold but loved ending a somewhat stressful day on such a beautiful note.

Labor Day Vacation 2017 ~ Day 2~ Witchita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and camper Tour

    Thursday, September 7th, 2017

We made it to our campsite and they still had three spots left!!!!

    YAY!

I chose the one most secluded and it was beautiful.

We dropped the trailer, paid, and went to see some of the refuge.

    awildlifeDSC_4684

The Prairie Dog Town was a favorite of the kids.

    awildlifeDSC_4703

    They would get so close!

    awildlifeDSC_4706 awildlifeDSC_4718 awildlifeDSC_4738 awildlifeDSC_4762

How they felt about my kids…

    awildlifeDSC_4766 awildlifeDSC_4786 awildlifeDSC_4788

Our first hike we went for was really easy since we had our dog with us and she is getting old.

    awildlifeDSC_4795 awildlifeDSC_4811

We saw a lot of wildlife at our campground!

    awildlifeDSC_4824 awildlifeDSC_4841

The visitor center has a beautiful museum.

    awildlifeDSC_4844 awildlifeDSC_4850

This next pic shows why museums start to wear me out quickly though…

    awildlifeDSC_4852

Too much energy to be inside for long.

    awildlifeDSC_4856 awildlifeDSC_4866 awildlifeDSC_4880

    On top of Mt. Scott.

    awildlifeDSC_4883 awildlifeDSC_4887 awildlifeDSC_4892 awildlifeDSC_4896 awildlifeDSC_4899

Most of my kids loved jumping from rock to rock!

    awildlifeDSC_4907 awildlifeDSC_4910

    Such incredible views!

    awildlifeDSC_4916 awildlifeDSC_4921 awildlifeDSC_4926

    These two goofs love mountains.

    awildlifeDSC_4934 awildlifeDSC_4939 awildlifeDSC_4943 awildlifeDSC_4964 awildlifeDSC_4978 awildlifeDSC_4989

    Boulder jumping.

    awildlifeDSC_4991 awildlifeDSC_4997 awildlifeDSC_5001 awildlifeDSC_5006 awildlifeDSC_5010 awildlifeDSC_5020

    Sunset’s were my favorite.

    awildlifeDSC_5039 awildlifeDSC_5041 awildlifeDSC_5043 awildlifeDSC_5045 awildlifeDSC_5050 awildlifeDSC_5052 awildlifeDSC_5060 awildlifeDSC_5064 awildlifeDSC_5066 awildlifeDSC_5070 awildlifeDSC_5078 awildlifeDSC_5080

The camper made bedtime so much easier!

    awildlifeDSC_5083 awildlifeDSC_5095

The boys slept in the two high bunks and little bit slept in the low bunk.

    awildlifeDSC_5096

The twins slept closer to our room, on the couch, and fold down table.

    awildlifeDSC_5097 awildlifeDSC_5101

We only had eclectic so we did not really use the bathroom for much but little bit fits really well 😉

    awildlifeDSC_5102 awildlifeDSC_5104

I really like that there is less room in our room so that we have enough beds out in the other spaces.

    awildlifeDSC_5105 awildlifeDSC_5109

The next day brought more great views, amazing places, and some obstacles to overcome…

Digging for crystals at the Salt Plains ~Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge

    Monday, June 19th, 2017

    asaltDSC_9771

You can dig for selenite crystals at the Salt Plains during the summer!

More info on crystal digging on their site, here.

Although we have visited the area several times, this was our first time digging.

    asaltDSC_9778

One of these days I will get to watch a sunrise or sunset here.

It is on my “bucket list”.

I am not organized enough to write it down, I just keep telling myself someday.

    asaltDSC_9785

I was not sure before we got there if the kids would actually enjoy doing this but they were crazy about it!

    I should have guessed.

They think looking for rocks in our yard is exciting.

    asaltDSC_9787

    They kept yelling “we’re rich!!!!”

    asaltDSC_9798 asaltDSC_9804 asaltDSC_9815 asaltDSC_9818 asaltDSC_9840 asaltDSC_9857

You will get muddy so be prepared.

    And it was crazy windy!!!!

    asaltDSC_9861

Shortly after I took this pic Little Bit smeared the mud all over her legs…

    asaltDSC_9868

    Treasure!

    asaltDSC_9873

She was super proud of how muddy she was, until it started drying…

    asaltDSC_9877 asaltDSC_9894 asaltDSC_9910

You will need a shovel and plenty of sunscreen!

    asaltDSC_9950 asaltDSC_9953

There are several overlooks around the refuge.

    asaltDSC_9956 asaltDSC_9961 asaltDSC_9973 asaltDSC_9990

We went on the wildlife drive in the refuge and I was surprised when we did see quite a few egrets.

Usually we like to go on these at dawn and dusk since that is when more animals are out and about.

    asaltDSC_9992 asaltDSC_0015_01 asaltDSC_0032

They have some easy hikes that you can go on in the refuge also.

    asaltDSC_0037 asaltDSC_0040_01 asaltDSC_0045_01 asaltDSC_0058_01 asaltDSC_0060 asaltDSC_0066_01

We played at the beach in the Salt Plains State Park also.

It has a really nice sandy beach but the waves were pretty intense and the water was very dirty looking.

Not sure if it was windier than normal or not.

I did not take my camera swimming with us so not pics from that except on my instagram account.

I did take my gopro so maybe I can put a video together.

    asaltDSC_0079

I saw this pretty lake on our way to the salt plains and wanted to be sure to stop and take pics on the way home.

    asaltDSC_0104_01

Nick stayed in the vehicle with the kids and I walked down to a boat ramp to take pics.

    asaltDSC_0113

It was so peaceful after so many hours in the vehicle with 5 kids.

    asaltDSC_0117 asaltDSC_0124 asaltDSC_0128

If you have kids that like to treasure hunt than you should check out crystal digging at the Salt Plains!

It was so much fun and a lot easier than I thought!
